  • Taichi

Tai Chi is an internal martial art of traditional Chinese culture that is valuable in promoting health, developing combat and self-defense skills, improving concentration and longevity. This ancient art uses a series of movements performed in a slow, focused manner and accompanied by deep breathing to reduce the stress of today’s busy lifestyles.

Tai Chi emphasizes complete relaxation, and is essentially a form of meditation, or what has been called “meditation in motion”, but it might well be called “medication in motion.” This gentle form of exercise can prevent or ease many ills of aging and promote the health of mind, body, and soul through its soft, controlled movements.

  • Swimming

Halong Bay is said to be one of the best places to swim in Vietnam with numerous beaches. The Bay is not only an ideal place for sunbathing with dazzling sunlight, but also a beautiful beach with calm tides, clean, and green water. It would be even much more enjoyable if you have a chance to swim far away from the beach, maybe diving from a cruise, because the water there is much more transparent.

However, the calm tides still possess hidden dangers, so following safety instruction is strongly advised:

  • Carefully follow the instructions and conditions before swimming or surfing.
  •  Always swim in a group of at least 3-5 people. Remember to warm up properly.
  • Researchers say swimming ability is severely decreased in cold water so no matter how confident you are at you swimming, try not to swim too early in the morning or too late in the afternoon. The average temperature of Halong Sea is around 19-25 Celsius degree, in which the area near the shore (shallow area) is recorded approximately equal to the environment temperature.
  • Knowing your own swimming ability to choose suitable beach activities.
  • Diving as deep as possible to evade huge waves in case you don’t have enough time to get away from it. Luckily, this seldom happens in Halong.
  • While surfing, do not ride waves in a straight line toward the shore. Instead, surf at a small angle to the waves. Stay away from the white water in the center of the wave to avoid “over the falls”.
  • Never swim in deep water or when you don’t know exactly how deep it is.
  • Never swim while intoxicated. Precedents of death due to hypothermia and other accidents have been recorded in Halong.
  • Not to try to sunbathe for too long, you might catch sunburn.
  • Halong Bay water is pretty warm during winter so feel free to swim or dive from your junk, however, try to cover yourselves immediately when you are done with the swimming because you might catch a cold. The temperature during winter can get as low as 10-15 Celsius degree.

  •  Visit Fishing Village

Floating villages are among the most special attractions of Halong Bay. There are some villages in the World Heritage Site: Ba Hang, Cua Van, Vung Vieng and Cong Dam. Among them, Vong Vieng and Cong Dam villages belong to Bai Tu Long Bay in a less touristy area.

Most of the junks and cruises would pass by one of these floating villages and would probably make a short stop at a fish farm to observe daily life or just for the visitors to have a peek into the basic living of the villagers. Among many activities in the program, the one which is found to be the most enjoyable was the visit to the floating village. Some inhabitants came to pick you up with little sampan touring their village.

Each fishing village has about 30 – 50 families with the population of around 200 – 600 people. As most of the rock islands in the area are too poor to be cultivated, daily life in the village is very hard and poor. Food and water are imported from the mainland; the main income is from fishing and tourism activities.

The village is a true water world, rising and falling with the tides, sheltered amidst limestone towers. Visitors will see the floating school, where the children go. The village also survives from tourism. They have a deal with the cruise companies who bring them tourists to paddle around their homes.

The floating village is home to many generations and many of the residents never leave, but grow up and grow old in this unique world where they are born into.

Education for children here is an important matter to be concerned. When life is not easy, they need to know how to survive by learning swimming, helping their parents. The children learn to swim before they can walk. Actually, their life will be the same as their parents if nothing changes.

Visitors here are lured in by the beautiful fishing village – little houses on the water, groups of living house tied together to defend against storms and typhoons, the simple and honest fishermen and the sunburnt faces of the innocent little children. It is all peaceful and charming.
